Michigan Department of Education Student Advisory Council Webinar

The Region 8 Comprehensive Center and the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) staff, along with students who have served on the MDE Student Advisory Council (SAC) presented on how one state is elevating students’ perspectives around educational policies and practices, while also increasing student leadership skills to work collaboratively with educators in support of inclusive schools. Hear what the students and adults have learned from their experience on the Student Advisory Council.

The Student Advisory Council comprises high school students from across the state. They meet monthly virtually with the state superintendent to dialogue with Dr. Rice about education policies and issues that impact the lives of students, to develop leadership skills, and to use their acquired skills to strengthen their respective schools. One major accomplishment of the students is the Student Advisory Council Safe Spaces Resource, a document created to guide educators in establishing, utilizing, and understanding the benefits of safe spaces in schools. The students on the Council found this document necessary because when students feel a sense of belonging within their schools they are better able to reach their academic and personal goals.
